![]() JPGs are 2D pixel-based ‘raster’ images, which makes them better for photographs or scans, rather than digital illustrations which are often better as ‘vector’ images. JPG is a universal format which can be opened by almost all image-viewing or -editing programs, by web browsers, and by certain other apps, and they’re supported by most devices. JPG, or JPEG, is one of the most widely used digital image formats. DNG files can be opened by most image applications including Microsoft Photos, Apple Photos and Preview. However, with quality comes an increased file size so they tend to be converted to a more lightweight image type such as a JPG or PNG which are more easily shared. ![]() ![]() DNG files are high quality and therefore popular amongst photographers and others who have a need to print high quality pictures. As it’s name suggests, it’s effectively a negative so it matches what was captured by the camera’s sensor. It is similar to these files however in that a DNG file has not been compressed and it’s data has not been processed. Unlike RAW image files native to that model of camera (like a CR2 file, X3F and so on) a DNG file can travel across different models and brands of cameras. A DNG file is a RAW image file that has been captured using a digital camera. A DNG file format is more commonly known as a Digital Negative Image file which was developed by Adobe.
